June 22
Work on clearing the garden slowly continues. The heat is still oppressive, with the heat index reaching 107 degrees. Tomorrow I should be ready to put in my plants. If I don’t get things growing soon, it will be a lean winter.
In the meantime, I have made some good trades. I had a stack of pots of various sizes that I found during the garden clean-up. I traded them to a lady who has a blueberry patch. In exchange for the pots, I got to pick a gallon of fresh, organic blueberries.
The following day, I traded some blueberries and some cookies I made for a loaf of fresh, homemade bread. Homemade bread tastes so good! Definitely worth the trade. I have the supplies to make bread, but not the time. I am racing against time to get the plants in.
I found potatoes growing in a Hügelkultur bed. They are ready to harvest and cure. Once they are out, bush beans and pole beans will go in. I hope the seeds I have will germinate.
There are apple and pear trees here. The pear trees are loaded with fruit. I’ve been checking one pear on the Pineapple pear tree every day. It is almost ready to pick. I’m holding my breath, hoping that someone—or something—doesn’t pick the pears before they are truly ripe and leave me with none.

The apple trees aren’t doing as well as the pear trees. I need to give them some care and hope they improve next year.
